Straight bananas, wonky bananas? Forget that. The real issue is the excessive plastic wrapping of fruits. In a bid to cut plastic waste, leading British supermarket Iceland is trailing the use of recyclable paper bands to wrap around bananas. The trial is running in three stores and will be rolled out to all of its 120 branches. Iceland estimates the change will eventually save over 10 million plastic bags per year.

Waitrose, another British supermarket is also trailing the use of paper wrapping, on its Duchy Original bananas. These moves are part of a growing trend of consumers rejecting plastic packaging.
